Here is a pic of a carpet weaver in Turkey; thousands of tiny threads are interwoven to create this work of art, replicating century old patterns and designs in silk and wool.
A 7' by 10' 50 rug and it is typically completed in about 6-8 weeks by a team of 2 to 4 weavers. Also, weavers rarely work on just one rug and typically have several going at the same time. This is done to reduce their financial burden if one rug is not sold and it is also to keep their minds sharp. Small high quality Tabriz rugs up to 5' are typically made by one person and a good weaver can knot about 1 square meter per 10 working days. So a 7x10, which is roughly 6 square meters would take about 60 working days if only one weaver worked on it, but almost every large rug is made by 2 or more working in teams, which can cut down the time dramatically.
-"Knots Per Square Inch" or KSBI: for the practical purpose, anything with less than 150 kpsi is typically considered low, 150-250 medium, and 250+ high quality.
